The use of stainless steels in urban settings is growing today as both local administrations and people see the benefits that stainless steels offer, particularly providing long-lasting low maintenance attractive solutions and consistently attracting people into cities. The applications range from street furniture through ‘people-moving’ systems to human protection systems.

Stainless steels in urban settings offer a timeless appeal and yet despite the growth in the use of stainless steels, some fundamental and completely avoidable corrosion problems are now being observed across many applications and installations. These problems generally arise from a small number of issues associated with some common corrosion types.

At the end of this steeltalk, participants will be able to:
• Identify common types of corrosion encountered in urban environments.
• Describe simple and effective methods to prevent these types of corrosion.
• Analyze how different urban settings influence corrosion mechanisms.
• Evaluate the impact of environmental variation across cities on corrosion management strategies.
